Beverly caught his look. "Gotta go. Scotty's almost up." Her nephew in the yellow number 3 was on deck. She flung her briefcase across her shoulder. "Who's ahead anyway?" |

"You are." Terry watched her leave. |
|
|

Calvin left to get drinks. |

|
|

He came back with two Diet Sprites just as the fourth inning began. It was nearly seven. The third inning had taken nearly thirty minutes, during which the Cardinals pushed the score to a nine-to-seven lead. |

|
"We can still catch them," Calvin said. He sipped his drink and began to settle into the game when Terry turned to him. |

"What was that about a small scientific lab?" |

|
|

"Oh, nothing. I'd just called her about something . . ." |

They were silent for a moment. "Like what?" |

He made an exaggerated dismissal gesture. "Something about the deed." |

"The deed? What about it?" |
|
|

Terry nodded to the opposite grandstand. "I can ask her myself if you prefer." |

"Christ," he began but didn't seem to know where to take it. "All the talk about moving to New York, and all. That's all." |
